⭐ Sora 2 is dead
Sora briefly “soared” then fell back down to the ground after the app peaked at 1M users a day
Why this matters: 1. Hooray! and 2. Studios and A-list actors refused to opt in, blocking Sora 2 from using recognizable faces, voices, and major franchises at its peak. That killed the viral spark, replacing familiar IP with generic AI slop clips. Turns out there is some magic left in Hollywood after all..
⭐ Shocker for BTS
BTS’s wildly anticipated comeback concert saw less than half of the 250k expected fans attend, with the final estimate in the 104k range. Obviously that’s a ton of fans, but the disappointment led to a 15.5% stock drop for Hybe, the company behind the K-Pop stars.
⭐ ‘Minecraft’ is opening a theme park in London
The $70 million project is set to open in 2027 and another huge bet on IRL experiences.
⭐ MrBeast poached another exec
Gaude Lydia Paez who has spent time in senior roles at Fox, Hulu & Riot Games is taking over the CCO role at MrBeast. Creator economy jobs are no longer the little sibling to traditional media. They are some of the most desirable jobs out there. Another semi-recent example: Sean Atkins former exec at MTV, Discovery, Jellysmack, HBO etc. taking the CEO role at Dhar Mann.
⭐ The Creators Guild of America is releasing an IMDB for creators
Their goal is for Mosaic to serve as a creative resume similar to Instagram or LinkedIn. Awesome idea and excited to see where it goes.
⭐ Epic Games is laying off 1,000 employees after Fortnite sees continued drop in popularity
Epic has in effect cut 20% of their total staff, and their goal is to shave off $500 million in expenses as a result. Sad day for a lot of talented people.
⭐ Nexstar’s $6.2 billion buyout of Tegna may be on hold after 8 states file an emergency motion to block it
Why this matters: Nexstar is already the biggest TV station group in the US, and since Tegna is 3rd on that list, the move would result in a massive 259 stations under one umbrella.
If it goes through would give Nexstar 80% control of US TV, breaching the rule that no company can own more than 39% of the market. Is it just me or does the world feel like one big game of Monopoly these days?
